Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

This is often been called America’s last great wilderness. It has 19.6 million-acre refuge rich in 36 fish species, 36 land mammals, nine marine mammals, and more than 160 migratory and resident bird species. ┬áIt is the most important polar bear and Porcupine caribou herd calving area. The visitors travel by air with most flying scheduled air service from Fairbanks to Fort Yukon, Kaktovik or Deadhorse, then chartering to a river gravel bar.
